When you need a new water heater, the choice generally comes down to whether to buy a traditional or tankless one. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages. Which one to buy also comes down to your individual circumstances.

Traditional Water Heater Advantages

These water heaters can store a lot of water. This means you can take a shower and run the dishwasher at the same time without worrying about running out of hot water. They’re less expensive to buy and install than a tankless water heater.

Traditional Water Heater Disadvantages

They’re not very energy efficient as they lose heat. They usually last from 10 to 15 years but might need replacing when they’re just 8 years old. A traditional water heater takes up a relatively large amount of space.

Tankless Water Heater Advantages

As they can last as long as 30 years, tankless water heaters have a much longer lifespan than traditional ones do. They’re also much more efficient than a traditional water heater, as they don’t store hot water. A tankless water heater is far smaller than a traditional one.

Tankless Water Heater Disadvantages

Tankless water heaters are more expensive to purchase and install than traditional ones. This is especially true if there is retrofitting involved. They can have trouble keeping up if you’re using a lot of hot water at the same time, such as multiple people taking showers.

Which Should You Choose?

If the cost of buying and installing a water heater is a major concern, you should buy a traditional one. Otherwise, a tankless water heater can be a great choice, especially if you have a small household.
